How to Make Your Business Visible in AI Search: A Practical Guide for Website Owners
Search is changing.
Potential customers no longer use only short Google queries such as “accountant near me” or “best CRM for a small business.” They also ask complete questions in Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and other AI-powered tools:
- Which local company can solve this particular problem?
- What is the best product for my situation and budget?
- How do these two services compare?
- Which supplier works in my region?
- What should I check before choosing a contractor?
The answer may include several sources, a short list of businesses, product suggestions, or links for further research. This creates a reasonable concern for business owners:
Why are AI systems finding and mentioning competitors, but not my company?
There is now an entire industry offering “GEO,” “AEO,” “AI SEO,” guaranteed ChatGPT rankings, special AI files, and other supposed shortcuts. Some recommendations are useful. Others are simply traditional SEO under a new name. A few have no support from the platforms they claim to influence.
This guide takes a more careful approach. It is based on current public documentation from Google, OpenAI, and Microsoft rather than unverified experiments or promises.
The short version is simple:
You cannot force an AI system to recommend your business. You can, however, make your website easier to discover, understand, verify, and use as a source.
That work begins with good SEO, clear business information, genuinely useful content, and technically accessible pages.
What “visibility in AI search” actually means
AI visibility is not one position on one results page. A business can appear in several different ways:
- a page may be cited as a source in an AI-generated answer;
- the brand may be mentioned in a comparison or recommendation;
- a service page may appear as a supporting link;
- a local business may be included in a location-based answer;
- a product may appear with its image, price, availability, and seller;
- or a user may receive a direct link to the company after asking a follow-up question.
These are different outcomes, and they are not fully controlled by the website owner.
AI answers can change with the wording of the question, the user’s location, current information, available search results, and the system producing the answer. Google also explains that its AI features can run several related searches — a process called query fan-out — before selecting supporting pages. This means a page may be discovered through a more specific subtopic rather than the exact words in the original question. Google Search Central
For website owners, the sensible goal is therefore not to “rank number one in ChatGPT.” It is to increase the number of relevant situations in which search and AI systems can confidently use the website.
Is AI search optimization different from SEO?
Not as much as the marketing around it may suggest.
Google’s official guidance is explicit: established SEO best practices continue to apply because Google’s generative AI features are connected to its core Search ranking and quality systems. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet before it can be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Conversational search makes some qualities even more valuable:
- covering a subject clearly enough to answer complex questions;
- showing real experience rather than repeating generic information;
- making facts easy to verify;
- keeping product, service, and company information current;
- and creating pages that satisfy a specific need instead of trying to target every possible phrase at once.
These are not secret AI hacks. They are signs of a well-built, trustworthy website.
The labels “GEO” and “AEO” can be useful when discussing a particular type of search experience. But for Google, optimizing for generative AI search is still part of optimizing for Search. The important question is not what the service is called. It is whether the work improves discovery, understanding, usefulness, and trust.
1. Make sure search and AI crawlers can access the website
Before improving content, confirm that the systems you want to reach can actually access it.
For Google’s AI features, the page needs to be crawlable, indexed, and eligible to appear with a snippet. Google specifically recommends checking:
- whether
robots.txtallows crawling; - whether a CDN, firewall, or hosting security layer blocks legitimate crawlers;
- whether important pages contain a
noindexdirective; - whether the server returns a successful response;
- and whether the important content is available in textual form.
These are basic checks, but they are often where visibility problems begin. A beautifully written page cannot become a source if it is accidentally hidden from search.
ChatGPT search has its own search crawler, OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI states that websites which opt out of this crawler will not be included in ChatGPT search answers, although a navigational link may still appear in limited circumstances. That distinction is important. Allowing a website to appear in ChatGPT search does not require giving the same permission for model training.
A technical audit should therefore check the actual production environment, not only the WordPress reading settings. Security plugins, bot protection, server rules, maintenance mode, incorrect canonical tags, and staging-site directives can all make a public-looking website difficult or impossible to index.
2. Give important topics their own clear destination
AI search has not removed the need for good website architecture.
If a business provides several substantially different services but explains all of them in two sentences on the homepage, the site gives search systems very little material to retrieve. The same problem appears when a company serves several industries, locations, or customer types without explaining what changes between them.
This does not mean creating hundreds of near-identical pages. It means creating a focused page when a topic has:
- a distinct customer need;
- enough useful information to deserve its own page;
- a different service, product, application, or decision process;
- or a meaningfully different search intent.
A strong service page should make the basics unambiguous:
- what the service is;
- who it is for;
- which problems it solves;
- what is included;
- where it is available;
- what limitations or requirements apply;
- how the process works;
- and what the visitor should do next.
The page should be reachable through normal navigation or contextual internal links. Google says it uses links both to discover pages and to understand their relevance. An XML sitemap is also useful, particularly for a new, large, complex, or frequently updated site. It helps search engines discover important URLs and understand when they have changed. 3. State clearly what the business does
Many business websites are visually polished but surprisingly vague.
The homepage says the company delivers “innovative solutions.” The service page promises “quality without compromise.” The About page talks about passion. Yet the site never clearly states the exact service, customer type, location, delivery area, qualifications, or practical reason to choose the company.
People can sometimes infer this from images and context. Search systems should not have to.
Use plain, specific language to describe:
- the official business or brand name;
- the main products and services;
- the industries or types of customers served;
- the geographic area;
- the business model, where relevant;
- contact and customer support information;
- and any important conditions, certifications, or specialisms.
This information should be consistent across the website. A business should not use one company name on the homepage, a different shortened version in the footer, an old address on the contact page, and obsolete opening hours elsewhere.
For local businesses, claim and maintain a Google Business Profile. 4. Publish information that is difficult to replace with generic text
The internet does not need another article that says a fast website is important or that good customer service builds loyalty.
Google’s current guidance puts particular emphasis on unique, expert-led, non-commodity content. Its broader people-first content guidance asks whether a page offers original information, research, reporting, or analysis; whether it covers the subject substantially; and whether it adds value rather than merely rewriting other sources. For a business, useful original content can include:
- a detailed explanation of how the company solves a recurring client problem;
- a comparison based on real implementation experience;
- a case study with honest context, process, limitations, and measured results;
- original photographs, diagrams, tests, or product demonstrations;
- answers to questions the sales or support team receives repeatedly;
- a transparent explanation of pricing factors;
- a checklist that helps the customer make a decision;
- compatibility, installation, delivery, or maintenance information;
- regional or industry-specific requirements;
- and lessons learned from real projects.
This is where a small specialist business can compete with a larger generic website. It may not publish as often, but it can provide information that comes from direct experience and is not available in the same form everywhere else.
Writing for real questions does not mean creating a separate thin page for every variation of a keyword. 5. Make claims verifiable
“We are the best” is a claim. “We reduced the checkout error rate after rebuilding the payment flow” is potentially useful evidence — if the business can explain what changed and how the result was measured.
Trust grows when a website supports its statements with appropriate proof:
- real case studies;
- named methods or standards;
- original data;
- dates and update history;
- photographs of completed work;
- relevant certificates;
- clear author or company responsibility;
- client testimonials that follow applicable platform and legal rules;
- links to primary sources;
- and transparent limitations.
Google describes trust as the most important part of E-E-A-T — experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness. It also clarifies that E-E-A-T is not a single ranking factor. For ordinary business content, the practical lesson is straightforward: identify who is responsible for the information and give the reader sensible reasons to believe it.
External citations can also be helpful when a page relies on laws, official specifications, research, or platform rules. 6. Structure pages for readers, not for an imagined AI formula
Clear structure helps people scan a page and find the part they need. It can also help retrieval systems identify relevant information.
Useful practices include:
- a descriptive page title and main heading;
- headings that reflect real subtopics;
- concise definitions where a term may be unfamiliar;
- lists for genuine sets of steps or requirements;
- tables for exact comparisons;
- descriptive link text;
- and a direct answer before a longer explanation when that suits the question.

This should not be turned into a rigid template. Google specifically says there is no requirement to break content into tiny “AI-friendly” chunks and no ideal page length. FAQ sections are useful when they answer real questions. Adding dozens of invented questions only to repeat keywords is not.
7. Keep important information in accessible text
Search and AI systems can work with multiple formats, but the essential meaning of a page should not exist only inside:
- an image;
- an untranscribed video;
- a downloadable brochure;
- a decorative animation;
- an inaccessible slider;
- or an interface element that is unavailable until complex client-side interaction.
Google explicitly recommends making important content available in textual form and supporting it with relevant high-quality images and video when appropriate. Google: AI features and your website
For example, a manufacturer can show a technical certificate as a PDF while also explaining on the page what it covers, which products it applies to, who issued it, and when it expires. An agency can publish a portfolio screenshot while also describing the client’s problem, the work performed, and the outcome. Accessibility also matters when AI agents interact with a website rather than merely cite it. OpenAI recommends accessible interactive elements with descriptive ARIA roles, labels, and states so an agent can better interpret buttons, forms, and menus. 8. Use structured data accurately — without treating it as an AI ranking switch
Structured data gives search engines explicit, machine-readable information about a page. Depending on the website, relevant types may include:
Organization;LocalBusiness;ProductandOffer;Article;BreadcrumbList;Event;- and other types supported for specific Google search features.
This can help Google understand page entities and make pages eligible for certain rich results. Google generally recommends JSON-LD because it is often easier to implement and maintain. However, structured data is not a guaranteed shortcut into AI answers.
Google states that no special schema.org markup is required for generative AI search and warns against overfocusing on structured data as if it were a dedicated AI optimization. Implement supported markup because it accurately represents the page and improves the broader search setup — not because someone promised that adding one property would make ChatGPT recommend the company.

9. Give ecommerce systems current, complete product data
For ecommerce, a normal product page is only one part of the visibility system.
Google recommends adding accurate product structured data and submitting product information through Google Merchant Center. Structured data can help Google understand details such as price, availability, shipping, and discounts. Keep these elements consistent:
- product title and description;
- canonical product URL;
- primary image;
- current price and currency;
- availability;
- brand;
- product identifiers such as GTIN or MPN where applicable;
- variants;
- shipping information;
- and returns information.
A feed that says an item is available while the product page says it is sold out creates an avoidable trust and accuracy problem.
ChatGPT also supports product discovery experiences. Product feed participation is a concrete ecommerce opportunity. It is different from trying to “submit” an ordinary service page for a guaranteed ChatGPT recommendation.
10. Keep business and content information current
AI answers are expected to be useful at the moment the question is asked. Outdated prices, expired certificates, old addresses, discontinued services, and obsolete instructions make a source less useful and can directly harm customers.
Create a realistic update process:
- review core service and product pages on a schedule;
- show meaningful publication and update dates where appropriate;
- remove or redirect obsolete pages;
- update structured data and feeds together with visible content;
- keep Business Profile and Bing Places details consistent;
- and correct important factual errors promptly.
Do not change dates simply to make an old article look new. Update the substance, then update the date.
For Bing and other services that support it, IndexNow can notify participating search engines when a URL is added, changed, or removed. 11. Use AI to improve content production, not to manufacture a content library
Using AI to research, outline, translate, summarize internal notes, or help structure original expertise is not automatically a search problem.
The risk begins when a company publishes large amounts of unoriginal material with little human review or added value.
Google’s spam policies define scaled content abuse as producing many pages primarily to manipulate rankings rather than help users. The policy applies regardless of whether the pages were created by AI, by people, or through another automated process. A sensible AI-assisted editorial process still requires a responsible person to:
- verify factual claims;
- check sources;
- add first-hand knowledge;
- remove generic filler;
- adapt the text to the real business;
- confirm that examples are truthful;
- and decide whether the finished page deserves to exist.
Publishing ten strong pages is better than publishing 500 interchangeable articles that no customer would choose to read.
12. Measure visibility without pretending the data is perfect
AI visibility is measurable, but not with one universal “AI ranking” number.
Use several sources of evidence.
Google Search Console

- total citations in supported AI experiences;
- the average number of cited pages;
- sampled grounding queries;
- citation activity for individual URLs;
- and visibility trends over time.

Analytics

Track more than sessions. Look at:
- enquiries and sales;
- assisted conversions;
- landing pages;
- engagement with key content;
- new branded searches;
- and the quality of leads.
Manual checks
Manual testing can reveal how platforms describe a business, but it is not a stable rank-tracking method. Answers can vary with wording, location, time, available sources, and user context.
Use a fixed set of realistic customer questions and record:
- whether the company is mentioned;
- whether the website is cited;
- which competitors and sources appear;
- whether the business is described accurately;
- and which content gaps the answers expose.
Treat this as qualitative research, not proof of a guaranteed position.
What does not work — or is not supported by current guidance
Expecting llms.txt to improve Google visibility
Google states that it does not use llms.txt or other special AI text files for Google Search. Creating one does not help or harm visibility in Google. Adding “AI schema”
There is no special Google schema for appearing in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Use valid, supported structured data that matches visible page content.
Breaking every paragraph into tiny chunks
Google says no special chunking format or ideal page length is required. Structure content for comprehension, not for a supposed extraction formula.
Repeating every possible long-tail keyword
Modern search systems can understand related wording and meaning. Cover the topic naturally and completely instead of publishing duplicate answers for minor phrase variations.
Buying fake mentions or manufacturing reviews
Google explicitly advises against inauthentic mentions. Artificial reputation tactics also create legal, platform, and brand risks.
Publishing large quantities of generic AI copy
Automation does not make content useful. Mass-produced pages without original value may fall under Google’s scaled content abuse policy.
Promising guaranteed inclusion
Google says meeting its requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving. AI systems select sources dynamically, and their answers vary. Any agency guaranteeing that a business will be recommended by ChatGPT or placed in Google AI results should be asked to explain exactly what it controls and which official documentation supports the promise.
A practical AI visibility checklist
Use this list as a starting point:
Verify the website in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
Confirm that important pages are indexable and return successful HTTP responses.
Check robots.txt, noindex, canonical tags, CDN rules, firewalls, and security plugins.
Allow OAI-SearchBot if appearing in ChatGPT search is part of the strategy.
Decide separately whether to allow or block GPTBot for potential model training.
Create a clear page for each genuinely distinct service, product group, or customer need.
Link every important page from relevant navigation or contextual content.
Maintain an accurate XML sitemap.
Put essential information in accessible text, not only in images, PDFs, or videos.
State clearly what the business offers, where it operates, and who it serves.
Keep contact details, hours, service areas, and company names consistent.
Claim and maintain relevant business profiles.
Publish original answers, evidence, examples, and case studies based on real experience.
Cite primary sources when making factual or technical claims.
Use supported structured data that matches visible page content.
Keep product feeds, prices, availability, and product identifiers accurate.
Review and update important pages when facts change.
Avoid mass-producing thin AI content.
Monitor AI visibility, referrals, conversions, and citation data where available.
Reassess content gaps using real customer questions.
The realistic goal: become a useful, trustworthy source
AI search does not make websites unnecessary. It changes how their information may be found and presented.
A customer may no longer begin on the homepage. They may first encounter one product, one explanation, one case study, or one quoted fact inside an AI-generated answer. The website still needs to support the next step: verifying the company, understanding the offer, comparing options, and making contact or completing a purchase.
The strongest long-term strategy is therefore not to write for a mysterious machine.
It is to build a website that:
- search systems can access;
- people and machines can understand;
- contains information worth retrieving;
- supports important claims;
- represents the business consistently;
- and remains useful after the user clicks.
No responsible developer or SEO specialist can guarantee that a particular AI system will recommend a particular company. What we can do is remove technical barriers, improve the site’s structure, make its expertise visible, and create stronger evidence for search systems and customers alike.
That is less dramatic than a secret GEO trick.
It is also much more likely to remain useful when the next search interface arrives.
